We are pleased to announce the 3rd RadioNet3 European Radio Astronomy Technical Forum Workshop. This event will take place on September 1– 2, 2014 at Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden.

This meeting is a continuation of a series of technical workshops combining several aspects of engineering and operational issues at European radio observatories. It provides the unique opportunity to cross border the different communities and to learn what ‘the others’ are doing and enhance communication between engineers, scientists and operators. Furthermore the conjunction with the international symposium of antenna related topics provides the unique chance to communicate with colleagues outside the radio astronomy technology and to bring our forum to a wider community.

The Workshop is sponsored and organized by the EU Consortium RadioNet3 within the Seventh Framework Program of the European Commission. Engineers, scientists, and operators working at, and observing with, our radio telescopes are welcome to present their interesting work in an oral or poster presentation.

Modern design of very large and/or extremely accurate antennas requires a clear understanding of the entire telescope system. The challenges hereby are manifold:

First of all the optical behaviour of the telescope has to be determined by the newest metrology techniques. The unprecedented results of mechatronics and CAD have now opened new challenges that can be solved only by measuring strategies so tight to be defined “metrological”. The old “homologous” construction limit has been largely superseded by the active control of thousands of actuators that now allow one to compensate for structural elastic deformations due to gravity and temperature gradients. Even at the time of the mechanical construction of such typically huge parabolic reflectors, a metrological statistical approach plays a determinant role. The consequent experimental verifications run from classical methods up to various forms of “holographies” and new laser ranging systems, each with its peculiar operational response.

In addition to this new kind of metrology, a radio observatory has to match also the newest Time and Frequency (T&F) requirements associated with the observations of extremely precise pulsar timings and/or millimetre VLBI. Availability of atomic frequency standards, sophisticated data handling algorithms, new external references, suggest to operate new optimizations in the T&F configuration of modern radio astronomical observatories.

The present workshop is intended to present such new metrological challenges hoping to find useful synergies within the community radio astronomy scientists, engineers and operational staff. It is now evident that the performance requirements of the newest observables of the fundamental research in Physics have reached a level so high, that only an integrated perspective among all the experimental disciplines can cope with them.
