Venturi To conform with the NATO ASI requirements, > > > PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL DEADLINES GIVEN BELOW HAVE BEEN ANTICIPATED < < < Purpose of the School _____________________ The Istituto di Radioastronomia of the CNR , on behalf of the European VLBI Consortium, will host the NATO ASI VLBI Summer School next September 17-29, 2001. The purpose of the ASI Summer School is to update and enlarge our knowledge on the scientific potential of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) and its development, 13 years after the similar school held in Castel San Pietro Terme. In particular, it is our purpose to review VLBI techniques in the light of the most advanced astronomical observations. The lectures will emphasize the scientific issues where this technique is recognised to play a crucial role, in the fields of galactic and extragalactic astronomy, astrometry and geodesy. Another important aim of the school is to stimulate discussion and collaboration among people working in different areas of research. The school is open to graduate students and post-doctoral level scientists. Lecturers and students are expected to stay for the entire duration of the school to ensure full interaction. A total of about 80 people, including participants and lecturers, are expected at the school. Lectures and Speakers _____________________ The typical schedule of the School will consist of morning and afternoon sessions, each including three lessons and one coffee break. A few tutorials will also be organised. The program will cover the following topics: - The need for high resolution obervations: radioastronomy, geodynamics, sub-millimeter optical and high energy astronomy; - Emission mechanisms in galactic and extragalactic astronomy; - Galactic astronomy (SNR, pulsars, masers); - Cosmic jets and black holes; - Environment (interstellar scintilaltion, radio and optical polarimetry); - Evolution of radio sources (Blazars, CSS, GPS, HFP); - Unified schemes; - Structure of the Universe (forming galaxies, HI absorption and emission, gravitational lenses); - Geodynamics; - Astrometry; - VLBI observing facilities, data analysis and tutorials; - Present and future observing facilities (VLT, KECK, SCUBA, Chandra, XMM, ALMA, SKA). Preliminary list of lecturers: B. Anderson (NRAL), R. Booth (OSO), I.W. Browne (NRAL), J. Campbell (GIUB), W.D. Cotton (NRAO, Charlottesville), P. Diamond (NRAL), H. Falcke (MPIfR), R. Fanti (Bologna University), M.A. Garrett (JIVE), J.F. Lestrade (Observatoir de Paris), J.M. Marcaide (Valencia University), C. O'Dea (STScI), R.W. Porcas (MPIfR), M. Salvati (OAF), G. Zamorani (OAB), A. Zensus (MPIfR). Leisure Actvities _________________ A visit to the Loiano optical telescope and to the Medicina radio telescopes will be organised during the School. Each will be followed by a dinner in a typical local restaurant. The first weekend (22 - 23 September) will be completely free, and a choice of excursions will be organised in nearby interesting historical places. We plan to have a football match among participants. Remember to take your swimming clothes if you want to take advantage of the thermal facilities inside the hotel. Location and Dates __________________ The School will be held at the Albergo delle Terme, Castel San Pietro Terme, a small town about 20 km east of Bologna, in the period 17 - 29 September 2001. Participants and lecturers will be accomodated in the same Hotel. Castel San Pietro can easily be reached by train from Bologna Central Station (IR trains directed to Ancona). The timetable for the trains to and from Bologna Central Station will be made available on the web at the school home page.
