| Volterra
is relatively easy to reach by car or bus from Pisa or Firenze (the
nearest international airports).
The best option is to use a rental car or a public
bus. Here are some tips for your trip:
DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
From FLORENCE (80 km , 1h10min):
Follow the directions to Siena (via the Freeway - Superstrada). If you
are coming from the A1 Highway, exit at "Firenze Certosa"
and follow the sign for Siena. Leave the Superstrada at Colle Val D'Elsa-Poggibonsi
and follow the route SS68 to Volterra. (map).
From ROME (280 km , 3h10min):
Follow the directions to Firenze and the A1 Highway (north), exit for
"Siena" and follow the route SS326 for Siena. Then go on the
Freeway to Florence (Superstrada). Leave the Superstrada at Colle Val
D'Elsa-Staggia and follow the route SS68 to Volterra. (map,
from the A1 exit to Volterra).
From LA SPEZIA-PISA (140 km , 1h45min, useful
if you are driving from NW, e.g. France):
Follow the directions to Livorno on the A12 Highway. Exit in Pisa and
follow the directions for the Fi-Pi-Li Freeway (Superstrada Firenze-Pisa-Livorno).
On the Freeway take the Florence direction and exit at Ponsacco-Pontedera.
Follow the route SS439 to Volterra. (map).
VOLTERRA BY BUS
From FLORENCE (approx 2hrs change at Colle val
D'Elsa):
Catch the SITA bus to Colle
val D'Elsa from Florence Main Bus Station (near the Firenze Santa Maria
Novella train station, across the street and around the corner from
the right exit of the station coming from the trains).
Upon
arrival at Colle val D'Elsa you need to catch the CPT
bus to Volterra (which will be waiting). Attached is the current timetable.
NOTE: "Feriale" includes Saturday, however this is the winter
timetable.
From
PISA:
There is
a CPT connection from Galileo Galilei Pisa Airport to Central Station
(approx 20 minutes) (see the timetable).
The bus terminus is located just outside the Departures area.
From
Central Station catch the CPT Line n. 140 from Pisa to Pontedera (see
the timetable) and then at the
same bus stop change CPT Line (n. 500) from Pontedera to Volterra (see
the timetable).
