INAF/IRA Fellowship for "Long baselines and short wavelengths: enabling the access to the most compact sources" (fellowship code 3/2021/IRA/AR)

This page is intended to provide information in English for people interested in applying to the INAF/IRA fellowship "Radio high angular resolution properties of gamma-ray sources". We remind that all the official information is given in Italian at http://info.ira.inaf.it/opportunities/bando-n-03-2021-ira-ar/. Abstract: the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) runs a project on the development of human resources associated with the Upgrade of the Sardinia Radio Telescope for the study of the Universe at high radio frequency. One of the total of 18 fellowships awarded for this project will be focused on “Long baselines and short wavelengths: enabling the access to the most compact sources”. The fellowship will focus on the prospects of Very Long Baseline Interferometry in Italy at high frequency, as made possible by the installation of multi-frequency receivers on the Sardinia Radio Telescope and the two other INAF antennas. This will allow the study, through imaging, of the structure of high energy extragalactic sources (blazars, radio galaxies) or of rapidly variable and transient sources, both in the Galaxy and in the extragalactic sky. The position is offered for 24 months, starting on 2021 June 1st (with the possibility of changes), with a gross salary of 28000 EUR/year. Application deadline is 2021 March 31st, and complete submission should be addressed to concorsi.ira@legalmail.it with subject “3/2021/IRA/AR”.

The call

Art. 1 - Subject of the selection

It is an open selection, based on evaluation of titles and a possible interview, for the project "Long baselines and short wavelengths: enabling the access to the most compact sources", to be carried out at INAF Istituto di Radioastronomia, under the supervision of Dr. Marcello Giroletti. The post-doc will carry out a research activity in the field of Very Long Baseline Interferometry network at high frequency. In particular, this will be aimed at the development of an Italian network, which will become a reality thanks to the installation of multi-frequency receivers on the Sardinia Radio Telescope and the two other INAF antennas. The science topic will be the study, through imaging, of the structure of high energy extragalactic sources (blazars, radio galaxies) or of rapidly variable and transient sources, both in the Galaxy and in the extragalactic sky. The fellow will work full time on this project and can not have other external contracts at the same time.

Art. 2 - Requirements

The formal requirements are as follows:

The following will be considered a preferential qualification: experience in radio astronomy and interferometry

Art. 3 - Terms of application

Applications can be prepared by filling in the annexes (“Allegato A, B, C”) at http://info.ira.inaf.it/opportunities/bando-n-03-2021-ira-ar/ and be submitted as PDF before 2021 March 31, 23:59 (CEST). Italian citizens should apply by certified e-mail ("PEC") Foreign applicants can use ordinary email to the address concorsi.ira@legalmail.it with subject “3/2021/IRA/AR”.

In the application, you will have to indicate:

You will also need to attach

Art. 4 - Incompatibilities

You may not hold the fellowship and another contract at the same time.

Art. 5 - Place and duration of the fellowship

Research activity will be carried out at the INAF Institute of Radioastronomy in Bologna, for 24 months. Justified unpaid interruptions will be allowed according to current regulations.

Art. 6 - Salary and more

The grant amounts to 28,000 Euros gross per year. This amount is net of burdens to be charged to INAF-IRA and will be paid in deferred monthly instalments. The fellowship is granted for two years.

Art. 7 - Selection committee

Applications will be evaluated by a Selection Committee appointed by the Director of INAF-IRA, composed of three members experts in the field.

Art. 8 - Selection procedure

The selection is based on qualifications, possibly integrated by an interview. At the interview, applicants must exhibit their identity documents unless the interview is being carried out remotely via electronic devices. In the latter case the Selection Committee verifies the applicant’s identity. Applicants selected for the interview will be informed via e-mail. The total ranking score is 100 points, of which 60 points is the maximum score for the qualifications and 40 points is the maximum score for the interview. Candidates will be admitted to the interview if they score at least 42/60 on the qualification evaluation.

Art. 9 - Award of the fellowship

The highest ranked applicant will be notified of the award of the research fellowship via email. S/he must provide a formal declaration of acceptance of the research grant within 10 days of such formal notification. Prior to signing the contract, the selected applicant must also provide a written statement that s/he is not subject to any of the exclusion conditions listed in the Call.

Art. 10 - Start of fellowship

The start date is 2021 June 1st, but can be reasonably moved. The Director of INAF will decide the exact date. The fellow will work dutifully, and if there are repeated and unjustified misbehaviours, the contract could be terminated. Serious reasons for interruptions can be admitted if clearly documented.

Art. 11 - Publicity

The call is advertised on IRA and INAF web sites, and other registers.

Art. 12 - Treatment of personal data

INAF observes current laws about personal data protections.

Art. 13 - Applicable regulations

For what not explicitly mentioned in this announcement, the regulations in force concerning public selection procedures apply. IRA respects all the current regulations to provide equal opportunities to all applicants.
