Dear colleagues, this is the Second Announcement of the Workshop
``Rotation Measure Analysis of Magnetic Fields in and around Radio Galaxies'',
to be held in Riccione, Italy, 10-14 May 2010.
Since there are severe hotel booking constraints we encourage you to register as soon
as possible: we cannot guarantee accommodation (and therefore attendance) after January 15th.
Those who expressed interest but have not yet registered definitively
are now invited to confirm their participation as soon as possible by sending
an email to rm2010@ira.inaf.it.
Scientific Rationale
Magnetic fields in groups and clusters of galaxies regulate
thermal conduction and influence the dynamics of bubbles and cavities. In
radio
galaxies, they are essential to the production of synchrotron radiation and to
most models for the collimation and acceleration of relativistic
jets. Multifrequency radio polarization observations have recently led to
important new results on foreground magnetic fields on parsec and kiloparsec
scales. This area of research is about to take a major step forward with the
commissioning of a new generation of instruments operating at centimetre
and metre wavelengths: EVLA, e-MERLIN and LOFAR.
This specialised Workshop will focus on the analysis of
multifrequency radio
polarization imaging to derive magnetic fields in thermal plasmas along
the line-of-sight to radio galaxies and quasars. Its aims are to take
stock of the
current state of the field, to compare different methods of analysis, to provide
a forum for theorists and observers to interact and to prepare for observations
with the new generation of arrays.
Topics will include:
- Algorithms for analysis of Faraday rotation data, including rotation-measure synthesis.
- Approaches to measuring the spatial statistics of rotation-measure
fluctuations, such as structure functions and Bayesian methods.
- Magnetic fields in individual elliptical galaxies, groups and
clusters; trends and differences.
- Coherent RM structures and their implications.
- Theory of magnetic-field generation and evolution in groups and clusters.
- The effects of interaction of radio galaxies with the surrounding medium.
- Implications for heating and cooling of groups and clusters.
- Observations of Faraday rotation on parsec scales.
- Theoretical models; implications for jet formation and collimation.
There will be no published proceedings, but all presentations and
posters will be made available on the conference web site.
Place and Date
The Workshop will take place in the seaside resort of
Riccione, Italy,
starting in the evening on May 10th (Monday) and lasting until May 14th
(Friday) 2010.
Riccione is one of the most renowned traditional resorts in Italy. As
well as more than 100 bathing establishments on the Riccione beach and the
sparkling nightlife, the splendid nearby countryside offers breathtaking
scenery and fascinating castles and fortresses rich in history, where the
epic deeds of the ancient Malatesta lords still live on.
Transport
Riccione is in easy reach to the 4 nearby airports of Rimini, Forli', Bologna
and Ancona which are served by low-cost flights to many European cities.
From these airports, you may take a train to reach Riccione: on average, it
takes 1.5 hours, 10 min, 45 min, 1 hour to reach Riccione from respectively
Bologna, Rimini, Forli` and Ancona.
See the
Trenitalia site
to have a look at the train timetable.
The Riccione railway station is within walking distance from the town centre.
A shuttle from the station to the hotel may be made available: further
information will be given in the Final Announcement.
The venue of the Workshop is the
Hotel Lungomare
where participants to the meeting will be accommodated as well.
The number of participants is limited to about 50 persons and
we cannot guarantee accommodation (and therefore attendance) after
January 15th 2010, thus we encourage you to register as soon
as possible by filling the
form on the Workshop website.
The registration fee is 550 Euro if paid before March 1st, 600 Euro if paid
later.
Please remember that at the registration desk we will accept cash only.
The registration fee includes hotel accommodation and Conference dinner.
The hotel accommodation includes: welcome dinner on May 10th and
half board (breakfast + lunch) for 4 nights excluding the lunch on Friday 14th.
Please note that the accommodation dates for the Workshop are fixed: if
you want to arrive earlier or stay longer please contact the Hotel
Lungomare directly.
Accompanying persons will be charged 96 Euro per day if in double room or
115 Euro per day if in single room. Prices are for half board and include all
the hotel facilities at disposal of the Workshop participants.
For payment via *bank transfer*, please use the following bank account:
Banca Nazionale del Lavoro S.p.A.
Account holder: Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica
IBAN: IT69 S010 0503 3090 0000 0218 500
BIC/SWIFT: BNLIITRR
Reason for payment: IRA RM2010 Conference
We remind you that any fee charged by the bank for the transfer has to be
paid separately by you and cannot be subtracted from the amount needed for
the registration.
Some RadioNet funds are available to support a small number of participants,
for whom a reduced fee of 450 Euro is applied and the accommodation
will be in double rooms to be shared with another participant.
Radionet grants are intended primarily for young
scientists (students and junior postdoc) based in the European Union, but a
special case can be made for support of one or two participants from
outside the EU.
Those granted support are required nonetheless to pay the full
registration fee of 550 Euro before March 1st 2010: reimbursement will be
made by RadioNet after the Workshop.
The procedure for nationals of countries not eligible for RadioNet support
will be decided on a case by case basis.
Important dates
- January 15th, 2010: End of registration.
- March 1st, 2010: Early payment (discounted fee)
- April 15th, 2010: Assignment of poster/oral contribution
- End of April: Final announcement
